Matthew C. Strauss – Chief Executive Officer

Matthew C. Strauss founded and has served since 1960 as the chief executive officer of M.C. Strauss Company. Mr. Strauss received his Bachelor’s Degree and National Forensic League Awards in 1955 from San Diego State University. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955-1957, and then started his own business after completing education for Real Estate Broker and General Building Contractor licenses.

Mr. Strauss has served in the leadership of the Jewish Federation of San Diego County for many years and was San Diego County general campaign chair for 1981 and 1982. Matthew was a founding investor of San Diego National Bank, an early investor of Qualcomm and several investments in the Bio Tech industry.

Matthew married Iris Lynn Leeds in 1954. They have three children and seven grandchildren. In 1985, the American Jewish Committee awarded Matthew and Iris the Colonel Irving Solomon “Human Relations Community Service Aware”. Iris is past President and Life Director of The San Diego Opera Company and past member of the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture and appointed by Mayor of San Diego as Liaison for Arts and Culture 2004-2012. Matthew has been a Trustee for San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art since 1987 and President of The Board of Trustees from 2013-2016, and both are Board Members of the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego. Matthew and Iris were also recently appointed to the UCSD Health Board of Advisors.

In addition to Matthew’s extensive business and philanthropic ventures, he and Iris are also world-class art collectors. Matthew is the Founder and President of the Matthew and Iris Strauss Family Foundation, founded in 2007, an organization that owns 75 world class artworks, created by national and international artists and housed in its own facilities, which is open to art groups for viewing by appointment. The foundation also lends its works to museums, universities and art institutes world-wide. Daniel F. Weiss, CCIM – Chief Operating Officer

Daniel joined M.C. Strauss Company as the Director of Leasing in May of 2015. He is a dynamic commercial real estate professional known for his expertise in development and implementation of lease-up strategies and repositioning of underperforming office and retail properties. Prior to his time at M.C. Strauss Company, Daniel was in commercial real estate brokerage for five years and negotiated numerous sales and leasing transactions, including several on behalf of M.C. Strauss Company.

Daniel was born and raised in San Diego’s north county and graduated from the University of San Diego in 2011. Daniel earned his CCIM designation in 2014, and has served on the Board of Directions for the San Diego chapter of CCIM ever since. In addition to his involvement with CCIM, Daniel has been a member of NAIOP’s Developing Leaders Program and is an active participant in the University of San Diego alumni association.

Steven M. Strauss – Executive Vice President

Steve joined the Company in 2021 as Executive Vice President.  His duties include assisting with the management of the company’s diversified portfolio of retail and office properties and identifying acquisition opportunities to further grow the company.  M.C. Strauss Co. currently owns 24 properties in California and Arizona with more than 1.7 million square feet of leasable space.

Steve is also a partner and first chair trial lawyer in Cooley LLP’s global litigation department with 40 years of experience achieving trial verdicts and settlements in excess of $10 billion.  Steve is one of the country’s most sought after trial lawyers for real estate, complex commercial and business litigation, intellectual property, and environmental matters.  https://www.cooley.com/people/steve-strauss

Over the course of his career, Steve has been lead trial counsel for some of the most prominent companies in the world such as Qualcomm and Kinder Morgan.  Steve represents corporate officers and directors, owners, developers, investors and high net worth individuals.

Steve has received numerous accolades as a trial lawyer.  Steve is a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and is a current member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, California Trial Lawyers’ Association, San Diego Trial Lawyers Association, San Diego Bar Association and the American Business Trial Lawyers Association. Steve is a Master of the Welsh Chapter of the American Inns of Court.  He is on the Directors Council for the Cardiovascular Institute at UC San Diego and founded the Strauss Cardiomyopathy Center at UCSD.  He is also past President and a current Trustee of the La Jolla Playhouse.

Steve received his undergraduate education in literature and political science, magna cum laude, from Claremont McKenna College in 1978, and law degree from University of California, Los Angeles in 1981, where he was a member and associate editor of the UCLA Law Review.

Pete L. Oakley – Director of Operations

Pete joined the Company in September of 2020 as the Director of Operations.  He is a seasoned real estate professional with experience managing portfolios for public and private real estate companies.  He is a licensed California real estate Broker and Texas real estate agent.

Prior to joining M.C. Strauss Company, Pete was the Vice President of Asset Management for a privately held development company with assets throughout the United States.  Prior to that, he worked with Realty Income managing the publicly held REIT’s portfolio in the southeast. He has also worked at Trust Company of the West coordinating the Debt and Distressed Real Estate Funds with Oaktree Capital.  He started his career as a CPA with Ernst & Young after graduating from California Polytechnic University, Pomona.

Pete lives in north county San Diego with his wife Theresa.  They have three adult children. Their weekends are spent pursuing their aviation and equestrian interests.

Will M. Strauss – Assistant Manager of Real Estate

Will joined M.C. Strauss Company in June of 2020 as an Assistant Manager of Real Estate. Prior to joining M.C. Strauss, he worked as an analyst for commercial real estate investment and development firms in San Diego, with responsibilities including financial and demographic analysis, underwriting of single and multi-tenant deals, in addition to leasing and property management activities. Will earned his Real Estate Salesperson License in February of 2020.

Will was born and raised in La Jolla, CA and graduated from The University of California Santa Barbara in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in history. Will is an avid golfer; he was a starter for the Division 1 golf team at UCSB and competed in the 2014 United States Amateur Championship. Will continues to compete on amateur circuits and aspires to be a top ranked amateur golfer while also pursuing his real estate career.
